It is in Douro that stems Port wine, one of the national wines that led Portugal to the four corners of the World. In the last two decades, the Douro wines won consideration and independence, asserting itself today as a source of heightened notoriety for the region.
Port wine is a natural and fortified wine made exclusively from grapes from the Douro Region, north of Portugal about 100 km east of Porto. "Régua" and "Pinhão" are the main production centers, but some of the best vineyards are at the furthest east.
It is one of the richest regions in autochthonous vine varieties, with hundreds of unique varieties and an extensive area of old vines, sometimes planted with dozens of mixed vine varieties.
